There is much debate about the need to update copyright protection laws. Emerging technologies, such as the growing and exponential use of Generative Artificial Intelligence, certainly challenge how we idealize and want copyright protection. Even so, at least in the last 25 years, we have experienced several technological transformations that have challenged the copyright system, and equally proportional were the proposals for changes in the regulatory scenario.

Unfortunately, the many initiatives, measures, and even bills of laws that were widely discussed – in some cases exhaustively – before society are forgotten and archived in the annals of history. Therefore, in order to have an informed public debate today, it is essential to revive these discussions carried out by the community, including relevant social and legal movements, which explain how we got to this point.

This initiative seeks to revive the debate on copyright through the lens of technology. By recalling the main discussions, ideas, and debates that have taken place throughout recent history, we present (i) a website that explains step by step the different phases of the copyright regulatory ecosystem; (ii) a web series with experts and professionals from different areas who shared their views on the current scenario; and (iii) an open course offered to explain the panorama of copyright, from its structure to the function we want it to have.
