what is the Project?

Redes de Proteção is an initiative of the Institute for Technology and Society (ITS Rio) and Redes Cordiais that seeks to promote safer digital environments for children and adolescents.

Keeping up with young people’s digital lives is an ongoing challenge for millions of Brazilian families. The growing use of technology by children and adolescents requires caregivers and educators to understand the risks of the digital environment and know how to respond. We need to protect children on the internet, not from the internet.

The project is supported by Google, YouTube, Meta, and TikTok.

how does the project work?

Research with families and caregivers

We investigated how different Brazilian families deal with children’s and adolescents’ internet use. The research highlights everyday practices, key challenges, and perceptions of the digital environment, pointing to concrete pathways to strengthen parental mediation and make online spaces safer.

Free online course

We delivered a free online course with live classes on safe internet use and dialogue strategies with children and adolescents, as well as recorded content featuring representatives from major digital platforms who demonstrate, in practice, how to use available parental mediation tools.

Redes de Proteção Community

We created a collaborative community for course participants focused on sharing experiences, questions, and content related to digital safety for children and adolescents.

Accessible educational content

We developed educational materials, learning games, and social media content that facilitate access to information on digital safety and parental mediation, supporting the dissemination of this knowledge by community members within their families, schools, and networks.

what are we working to achieve?

Our goal is to strengthen parental mediation in the digital environment, positioning caregivers as key actors in building healthier online experiences for children and adolescents.

We seek to promote the safe, conscious, and balanced use of the internet, reducing vulnerabilities to digital risks and expanding the positive potential of technology in the development of new generations.

By sharing knowledge about parental mediation tools and dialogue strategies, we aim to foster a culture of digital protection that balances safety and autonomy, preparing caregivers to support children and adolescents in navigating the online world in a critical, responsible, and healthy way.
